CONGRATULATIONS
To mark our first year, we chose to support two artists. Each will receive £1,200 and a year of mentorship with Cardboard Adventures, supporting their development as theatre designers and theatre makers working across UK theatre, stage design, prop making and theatrical craft.
This year we are proud to support Min Gilby (@shuftiearts ), an exceptional prop maker who has been working professionally for two years after training at the @watermilltheatre through the Careers in the Arts programme. Their application spoke honestly about the realities of working as a disabled artist and outlined how this support will help create a more accessible and sustainable workspace for theatre making.
We are also delighted to support Eve Wilson (@evewilson.design) a recent graduate of the @rwcmd . Eve is a talented theatre designer and maker committed to developing work collaboratively in rehearsal rooms with fellow creatives. Like many early-career artists, she highlighted the often unseen costs of travel and accommodation that come with building a freelance career in theatre. We hope this award creates more space for her to continue developing her practice.
We received an extraordinary number of applications from emerging artists, designers, prop makers, scenic artists and theatre makers across the UK. Reading them was a genuine privilege. Choosing two recipients felt like the right way to recognise that talent and invest in the craft and making that bring theatre productions to life.
WHAT IS IT?
The Cardboard Adventures Designer/Maker Award is an annual fund of £1,200, for one recipient a year, created to support UK-based early-career theatre designers and makers. The successful applicant will also have a the option of a years mentorship from Cardboard Adventures and our judging panel.
The fund is entirely self-funded by Cardboard Adventures. It is not supported by any publicly funded organisations or any other funding body.

WHAT THE
FUND IS FOR?
The £1,200 award is not project-contingent.
You do not need to propose an outcome, skill development or other project. If you are successful the money is yours to use in whatever way best supports you at this stage — whether making time to explore your craft or skills, or simply giving yourself a little breathing space to stay afloat and working in the industry.

Theatre designers (set and costume)
-
